Island of Rab
The island of Rab is located in the northern part of the Croatian side of the Adriatic Sea and belongs to the Kvarner island group. Together with smaller islets, the surface of the island of Rab is 86.14 km2. The direction of the island’s extension is northwest-southeast, and in that direction its length is 22 km. In the immediate vicinity of the island of Rab there are many islets, the largest of which are Goli, Grgur, Maman, Laganj veli, Laganj mali, Dolfin, Trstenik, Dolin and Sv. Juraj.
Rab has the so-called “Adriatic type” Mediterranean climate with pleasant warm summers and mild winters. Rab thanks the Kamenjak mountain range for such a climate, which protects it from cold storms in the winter and spring months. Apart from storms, a warm and humid wind – the southerly, which regularly brings rain – usually blows from the southeast in autumn. During the summer months, the mistral usually blows during the day, a pleasant breeze that relieves the summer heat. Other winds and storms are rare. The number of sunny hours per year is on average 2417, while the number of cloudy days is very small. Favorable sea temperature for swimming, which is 20°C, prevails from May to October. The average annual sea temperature is 16.7°C.
In the series of beauties, with which nature has endowed the island of Rab, the blue blue Adriatic takes the first place. It surrounds it from all sides, creeping into its land, creating a multitude of beautiful larger and smaller bays. The Adriatic Sea fascinates people when it is calm, it amazes them when it is turbulent. People admire it when they look at it from the shore, when they drive on it or when they dive into its clear, refreshing waves. Few people can accurately determine the color of the Adriatic Sea. Sometimes it is dark blue, other times greenish blue. Depending on the time of day, the angle of the sun’s rays, it continuously changes into a thousand shades. But always so beautiful and unique.
Rab is known for its diverse coastline, which means that you can swim on both sandy and rocky beaches.
In the village of Barbat, the most famous beaches are definitely “Pudarica”. The “Pudarica” beach complex is a complex of sandy beaches suitable for all ages. You can have refreshments in cafes.
The town beach is located on the promenade below the old town and stretches all the way to the next beach, which is a kilometer away, which is the beach “Škver”. There is a beach bar below the town and fast food on the beach “Škver” and the possibility of trips to nearby beaches by boat. The owners are local residents who have been in the business for many years.
Suha punta is perhaps the most beautiful part of this diverse island. It contains many rocky beaches that are a guarantee for a complete vacation with perfectly clean sea and green nature.
The most famous beaches are Matovica and the complex of beaches on Frankanje. There is also an FKK beach on Frankanje.
Lopar has 22 sandy beaches, the most famous of which is the “Paradise Beach”, which is perfect for younger people.
There are many establishments that offer catering services on Paradise Beach and nearby beaches. Along with food and drink, there is the possibility of renting pedal boats, scooters, going down the slide into the pool and various other facilities.
If you are in Lopar and you want to avoid the crowds and want to experience wild nature, you must visit the beaches located in the other part of Lopar. These are beaches like Sahara, Ciganka…
Thanks to its thousand-year history, the city of Rab abounds in numerous cultural and historical monuments. The whole town with its old bell towers, walls and noble family coats of arms on the walls of the houses is actually a monument in miniature, but some sights should be singled out and must be seen:
Varoš, Srednja ulica Tower and the Church of St. Christopher, Remains of the Church and Monastery of St. John the Evangelist, Church of the Holy Cross, Freedom Square, St. Andrew’s Monastery, Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Anthony Abbot’s Monastery, Municipium Arba Square, Port and the northern city avenue, City Lodge, Church of St. Francis on the cemetery.
Nightlife is guaranteed at the “Santos” night club, which is located right on the already mentioned “Pudarica” beach.
The entertainment center on Rab is focused in the old town, where you have a rich source of clubs, cafes, terraces, beach bars and other offers that attract people who want to have fun.
